The metaumetal-oxide reference mixture is physically and chemically separated from the glass melt by a (partially) stabilized zirconia tube, which acts as a solid electrolyte, conducting only oxygen ions. The oxygen activity of the metaumetal oxide reference mixture is a fixed and known value at a certain temperature, and this value is compared to the oxygen activity of the glass melt, “sensed” by the platinum measuring electrode. From the resulting electrical potential difference between the two electrodes, the electromotive force (EMF) and the measured glass melt temperature, the oxygen activity of the glass melt can be calculated.
