I think the album is probably the most positive, ‘weeping out of the speakers’ record we’ve made, and it perhaps reflects the moment we’re in. Everything is happening at once; there’s so much stuff, there’s so much media and there’s so much that you’re bombarded by. You can’t walk along the street without your pocket vibrating or, in some cases, your wrist vibrating to alert you to some new development. There’s a song called ‘Paralyzed’ where I’m having a subtle dig at myself and also just at this idea of being glued to these little screens.
Based on the classic ‘X-brace’ design used so commonly throughout the industry, the new Performance pattern is designed as a template that can be applied to the entire 500 series, but still allow for smaller modifications to tailor (no pun intended) the set-up for the particular dimensions and style of each guitar. The end result, in theory, is a voicing that brings out the best in the mahogany/cedar combo and all the wonderful tonal qualities that entails. Of course, were we just looking at the 514 our analysis of the build would be near complete by now, but the little ‘ce’ at the end of the model number means that you also get the award-winning and proprietary Expression System 2 thrown into the mix.
For £400, you’re getting into all-solid territory, and at the jumbo’s price point, there is plenty of all solid competition, but I would challenge you to find an all-solid for this sort of money which sounded better. My musical partner is desperately trying to scrape together the money to buy one. It’s hard to imagine a stronger recommendation for the parlour than that, and the jumbo won a place in my heart too. You will not be choosing between these two; they are different beasts for different purposes, but if you’re looking for an intimate fingerpicker, or a bold, brash flatpicker, then unless your budget extends to a hand-built boutique guitar, you should try these before you make your decision.
